New Mexico State University’s Department of Art will host sculptor Carolyn Salas on Thursday, September 26, as part of its Visiting Artist Lecture Series. Salas, who was named a 2021 Artist-in-Residence at Google and recently commissioned by the United States Tennis Association and the Armory Show to create a new outdoor sculpture for the US Open, will present at Devasthali Hall.

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be held both in-person and via Zoom. Attendees can register for the online presentation at https://nmsu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_qAxkevkARhidjrth3M4VSA.

Salas’ work involves using gallery walls as sculptures by carving human-sized shapes into them, transforming viewers’ perceptions of space and their relationship to objects. Her multidimensional chromatic sculptures blend geometric abstraction with figuration and draw inspiration from healing therapies and dream analysis. They reference themes such as ritual, female strength, resilience, mental health, and art history.

In conjunction with Salas' presentation, there will be opening receptions for three exhibitions: "Carolyn Salas: Night Vision," "Carlos Rosales-Silva: Border Destroyer," and "Warhol & Friends." These events will take place from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the University Art Museum located at NMSU.

Further information about these exhibitions can be found at https://uam.nmsu.edu/upcoming-exhibitions-events/index.htm.

Carolyn Salas' sculptures consist of waterjet cut powdered steel and aluminum pieces that are either mounted on walls or freestanding.
