The Las Cruces Fire Department will host three practice Physical Ability Tests to provide insight into the physical requirements of becoming a firefighter.

The tests, open to the public, are scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon on three consecutive Saturdays: Sept. 28, Oct. 5, and Oct. 12 at the Las Cruces Fire Department’s Training Tower, located at 1050 Crawford Blvd.

The fire department is accepting applications for fire cadets through Oct. 20, 2024. More information and the application process are available online.

The practice Physical Ability Tests offer prospective applicants opportunities to:

- Observe test components: witness each part of the PAT firsthand to understand the challenges and expectations of the fire academy.

- Ask questions: engage with experienced firefighters and trainers to clarify any doubts or concerns about the testing process.

- Receive tips and guidance: learn strategies and techniques to improve performance in each PAT task.

- Evaluate preparedness: assess current physical condition and identify areas needing improvement before taking the official test.

Participants are encouraged to bring water, a pen and notebook, and wear athletic clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for a physical ability test.
