The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) is currently accepting applications for its training academy, which is tentatively scheduled to commence in March 2025. Applications for the position of Police Cadet must be submitted by December 2, 2024.
The starting salary for police cadets accepted into the academy is $20 per hour. Graduates from the 22-week academy become officer trainees and receive $24 per hour. Officer trainees who successfully complete their one-year probationary status become patrol officers with a salary of $28.84 per hour.
LCPD offers significant hiring incentives for cadets committing to a three-year term. The incentives are non-stackable and include:
- $11,000 for each cadet.
- $15,000 for an associate degree.
- $20,000 for a bachelor’s degree or four years of honorable military service or retirement from the military.
- $25,000 for a bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, or criminology.
- $30,000 for a master’s degree in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, or criminology.
Recruits residing outside of Las Cruces may be eligible for up to $5,000 in relocation assistance.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 19 years old when submitting their application. They must have at least a high school diploma and no felony convictions.

The Las Cruces Police Department has an allocation of 220 commissioned officers but currently employs 183 officers.
