Developing Youth Leadership Academy offers insight into city operations for high school students

Attention high school students! If you are curious about the various City departments and how they impact your daily life, here’s your chance to dive deep into the inner workings of the City of Las Cruces and discover the roles that different City departments play in shaping our community.

The Developing Youth Leaders Academy invites all high school students ages 14-18 to participate in a unique event offering a behind-the-scenes look at city operations and an opportunity to meet dedicated professionals. The academy will take place from 1 – 4 p.m. on September 23 – 27, 2024. Registration is available through the Hot Topic link on the City of Las Cruces website.

Highlights of the week include:

Interactive tours: Explore various City departments including Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and the Police and Fire Departments.

Hands-on Activities: Participate in activities designed to show you the day-to-day functions and challenges of city operations.

Meet the Experts: Engage in Q&A sessions with City staff and department heads to gain insights into their roles and career paths.

Career Exploration: Learn about potential career opportunities within local government and how you can get involved.

“Whether you’re interested in protecting our city, providing important city resources, or simply curious about how your city runs, Developing Youth Leaders Academy promises to be both educational and inspiring,” states an announcement for the event.

The City of Las Cruces is also undertaking an update to its Land Development Code as part of Realize Las Cruces. The project includes regulations that govern land use and development within the city.
