City Council President and District 5 Councilor Dan Lewis, Mayor Tim Keller, and other city officials convened on Tuesday afternoon to initiate the construction of the Westside's first multigenerational center. The new Northwest Multigenerational Center (MGC), part of the planned four-phase Cibola Loop project, will be located at the intersection of Cuba Road and Cibola Loop. This facility will be Albuquerque's fourth multigenerational center.
In 2016, President Lewis led an initiative for the City to purchase nine acres of vacant land adjacent to the Northwest Area Command. "Soon families and residents of all ages in District 5 and on the Westside will have access to amenities closer to their homes," said Council President Lewis. "This Center will offer support for seniors, learning and fun activities for children, and a healthy place for families to recreate together."
The Northwest MGC is set to include a fitness center with a climbing gym, a gymnasium with an elevated indoor running track, a social hall, and various multi-use and classroom spaces. Future phases are planned to feature Albuquerque’s next library and regional pool complex. The site plan is designed to leverage the sloping west-to-east landscape, offering views of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains.
The Albuquerque Department of Municipal Development is overseeing the project. Site construction is scheduled to begin in June 2024, with building construction expected to start this summer. The facility aims to open in 2025.
