Today marks the beginning of a transformative journey for the Central Crossing Bridge in Albuquerque. Demolition has commenced on the existing pedestrian undercrossing to prepare for the construction of two ramps, one on each side of the pass, aimed at providing a safe and accessible at-grade crossing on the upper railway portion. This infrastructure improvement is intended to enhance safety and foster community connectivity between neighborhoods.

The pedestrian underpass at Central Crossing on 1st St. and Central Ave. has long been a site of safety concerns and an undesirable walkway between East Downtown and the Downtown Core. The City is now taking action to address these issues and create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

"Our community has been asking for an at-grade crossing at the First and Central Crossing for years, and now we are delivering," said Mayor Tim Keller. "This project is one of the many ways we are leveling up downtown Albuquerque and investing in safety so folks feel welcome when walking downtown."

Additionally, Central Crossing is a key component of the future Albuquerque Rail Trail, an iconic pedestrian and bicycle parkway that will reflect Albuquerque’s vibrant history and cultural diversity. The 7-mile bike and walking loop, dubbed "Trail of Enchantment," aims to connect Downtown, Old Town, Sawmill, the Rail Yards, and Bosque while narrating the story of local heritage.

"This project is a crucial step in realizing our vision for the Albuquerque Rail Trail," said MRA Director Terry Brunner. "The new at-grade crossing is a testament to our agency's dedication to revitalizing and reimagining public spaces for the betterment of our communities, bringing our families closer together."
