Today, Mayor Keller, the Parks & Recreation Department (PRD), the Department of Municipal Development (DMD), local lawmakers, and the community celebrated the commencement of Phase 2 of the Los Altos Park renovation. This phase will introduce Albuquerque’s first BMX pump track, capable of hosting regional and national competitions. Additional improvements include a dog park, completion of the central pedestrian walkway, road and access upgrades, landscaping, and other enhancements.

“The new BMX facilities coming to Albuquerque show that we are on track to attracting new regional and national sporting events,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The transformation happening now at Los Altos makes our city an even better destination for local families and visitors alike.”

The BMX pump track will be a unique addition to Albuquerque, suitable for hosting significant competitions while providing a year-round facility for local families.

“The pump track will revitalize an underutilized area and create a dynamic space for biking, scootering, and skateboarding,” said Kalvin Davis, a local pro BMX rider. “Together with our existing dirt track BMX facility, the pump track will further elevate Albuquerque’s national status in BMX.”

“I’m sure that the new generation of kids coming up will be excited about the BMX track,” said Lynne Martin, president of the Indian Moon Neighborhood Association. “When my kids were growing up, the streets and front yards were their homemade tracks.”

The pump track will be located on land owned by the New Mexico Department of Transportation as part of a partnership with PRD.

“Los Altos Park will be a premiere center for all kinds of activities,” said City Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn. “We are already seeing record levels of visitors to the park with the completion of Phase I and I’m proud to have this world-class facility here in District 7!”

“Our community is very excited and grateful for the overhaul of Los Altos Park,” said State Senator Mimi Stewart. “So many of us use this great resource in the middle of the City and I’m grateful to the City for the good infrastructure that has been developed in the park already.”

The City plans to build a new dog park south of the pump track to replace one previously located at the park’s southeast corner. The "spine" or concrete walking path will connect various amenities including softball fields, pool, skate park, dog park, Garden Center, and BMX pump track.

“We’re adding in new features for the community to enjoy and tying it all together,” said PRD Director Dave Simon. “We hope the community is pumped for completion of Phase 2!”

This project is expected to conclude in just over a year. During this period, the pedestrian bridge over I-40 at Los Altos will remain closed.

A total investment of $10 million from City funds along with state capital outlay funds is being directed into Los Altos Park. Phase 1 renovations were completed in July 2023 and included redesigning softball fields along with parking and vehicle/pedestrian access improvements.
