The City of Albuquerque's Crossing Guards, who maintain close relationships with the children and families they serve at elementary school crossings across the metro, have identified a pressing need among many families for clothing and food. To address this, Crossing Guards will be collecting new packs of socks and underwear at 40 different elementary school crossings before the end of the school year. This initiative aims to meet the high demand for undergarments in shelters or clothing banks, items that are often overlooked in donations. The drive is focusing on these essential items, referred to as "Seats & Feets," in all sizes for Albuquerque families.
Locker #505 Student Clothing Bank, a nonprofit organization, has set up a student-centric facility where children can try on and select outfits without worrying about price tags. Providing appropriate school clothing enables children to focus on their studies rather than their attire. It also encourages regular school attendance among children who might otherwise avoid class due to their clothes. The collaboration between Locker #505 and City Crossing Guards is seen as a natural partnership to assist Albuquerque families.
Crossing Guard Division Manager Richard Deichsel said, “Our guards see over 1,000 children daily while the schools are in session. They learn about the children and families who need resources for proper clothing during the changing seasons, and this clothing drive allows us to directly give back and help.”
The "Seats & Feets" Clothing Drive will commence on Monday, May 13, and conclude on Tuesday, May 21. Approximately 40 baskets will be placed at various schools throughout the city for donations. Contributions can also be dropped off at the Crossing Guard Office located at 604 Menaul Blvd. NW 87107 in the CABQ Records Complex. For more information visit cabq.gov/family/events.
