The City of Albuquerque is dedicating the month of May to mental health awareness and advocacy, aligning with the national Mental Health Awareness Month. Gilbert Ramirez, HHH Director, emphasized the importance of understanding mental health conditions as common and treatable. He said, “Mental health is crucial for overall well-being, yet stigma often hinders people from seeking necessary support. It's vital to understand that mental health conditions are common and treatable, with everyone deserving access to compassionate care.”

In 2023, New Mexico saw 36.4% of its residents reporting symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. The state’s suicide rate also surpassed the national average with 25 out of every 100,000 people compared to approximately 14 per 100,000 nationally.

Mayor Tim Keller expressed his commitment towards supporting organizations that work in the field of mental health. He said, “We are a community that cares for each other and we know that mental health is just as important as physical health. We’re committed to supporting the organizations that do this work and providing spaces for the community to unwind and get the resources they need.”

Two such organizations housed at The Gateway Center are NAMI Albuquerque and Haven Behavioral Hospital. Haven Behavioral provides both in-patient and out-patient medical care for individuals dealing with mental health and substance use conditions.

NAMI Albuquerque focuses on improving lives for New Mexicans impacted by mental health conditions through weekly support groups for patients as well as families and caregivers. They also provide education on mental health conditions for law enforcement through Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.

The annual NAMIWalks event aimed at raising awareness and funds will take place on May 19th at the UNM North Golf Course. Additionally, free meditation classes will be available every Thursday at West Mesa Community Center offering an opportunity for reflection and self-care.
