Mayor Keller and Chief Medina of Albuquerque have declared the expansion of ShotSpotter gunshot detection technology in the Uptown area. The ShotSpotter system was initially implemented by the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) in 2020, targeting parts of the city with high incidences of gunshots. Since then, the technology has been extended to other areas and has demonstrated its effectiveness as a tool for law enforcement.

Comparative data reveals that APD recorded an approximate 26% decrease in shots fired incidents in areas where ShotSpotter is active. The figures show a reduction from 5,244 incidents in 2023 to 3,865 incidents between January 1 and May 2, 2024. This decline can be attributed to the responsiveness of officers to ShotSpotter activations along with other technologies employed by the department such as cameras, license plate readers, and NIBIN technology.

Chief Harold Medina emphasized the strategic importance of ShotSpotter placement. He stated, “The strategic placement of Shot Spotter in conjunction with our other technology is key when it comes to the success we are seeing in gun-related crimes.” He further added that having ShotSpotter in the Uptown area will provide officers crucial information leading to better leads, stronger cases and ensuring individuals committing these types of crimes are held accountable.

While gun-related incidents are not frequent occurrences in the Uptown area, APD has witnessed several such events. With the implementation of ShotSpotter, alongside existing technology, officers will be better equipped to respond and investigate incidents or reports of gunshots effectively.

Mayor Tim Keller expressed his commitment towards technological advancements for city safety. He said, “APD continues to be a leader in technology across the nation, and we will continue to invest in the tools needed to protect our city.” He further emphasized that families and communities should feel safe while going about their daily lives - from dining out and shopping to going to work or school, or running errands.
