Fulbright funding awarded to four UNM students

The University of New Mexico has announced the selection of four students and recent graduates to participate in Fulbright programs this year, providing them with the opportunity to further their studies with funding assistance from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Kiyoko Simmons, UNM Honors College Fulbright Coordinator, expressed her anticipation for the awardees' journeys, highlighting the program's aim to promote mutual understanding between nations. She stated, "As these four awardees begin their journeys, I anticipate they will develop a profound appreciation for their host countries and communities."

One of the recipients, Katlin Riley, shared her excitement and gratitude for receiving the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award to Romania. Riley expressed, "I am excited and grateful to be a Fulbright recipient. I am looking forward to getting started and to the adventure ahead."

Leo Williams, another recipient, expressed their gratitude for the Fulbright grant to Bulgaria, saying, "I’m unbelievably lucky to have a Fulbright grant, an honor that wouldn’t have been possible without the accumulation of a series of events." Williams looks forward to transforming their relationship with Bulgaria and offering more reciprocity as a teacher.

Eleonora Edreva, awarded the Fulbright Research Award to Bulgaria, conveyed her joy at being selected for the program. She shared, "I’m overjoyed to have been awarded the Fulbright in Bulgaria. Applying for a Fulbright to do artistic research in Bulgaria is something I’ve thought about doing since my undergrad."

Devin Tankersley, a recipient of the Fulbright Research Award to Taiwan, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to pursue his research goals and create a bridge between Deaf communities in the U.S. and Taiwan. Tankersley stated, "I am thrilled to be a recipient of the Fulbright Open Research Award, as it will allow me to pursue my research goals while helping to create a bridge between the Deaf communities in the U.S. and in Taiwan."

Overall, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program aims to provide opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international study, research, and teaching. The program operates in over 140 countries worldwide and awards approximately 1,900 grants annually in various fields of study.
