The New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education (NMABE) has named College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) Associate Professor Carlos LópezLeiva as its University Bilingual Education Professor of the Year.

COEHS Dean Kristopher Goodrich praised LópezLeiva, stating, "Chair LópezLeiva is a wonderful colleague and leader of his program and department. I am not surprised by his receiving this honor as I know he has a strong vision for bilingual education for UNM and New Mexico. I’m glad that his work has been recognized by his academic peers.”

According to NMABE, the University Bilingual Education Professor of the Year Award is given to an outstanding university professor working in a completely bilingual teacher training program. LópezLeiva is one of two bilingual university educators recognized by NMABE this year at the organization’s 49th annual meeting.

LópezLeiva, who chairs the Department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies (LLS), has been teaching LLS and Bilingual and TESOL courses since 2011. The COEHS’s Department of LLSS, under his leadership, offers bilingual education courses and degrees at all levels to prepare education graduates to serve New Mexican K-12 students' diverse linguistic communities and promote bilingual education within the state and nationally.
