The ABQ BioPark recently welcomed two new residents to their Ape Walk exhibit. Makaio, a 7-year-old white-cheeked gibbon from Nashville, and Siena, a 6-year-old lar gibbon from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, have quickly become the latest attractions at the park.

In a statement, the park officials exclaimed, "Welcome to Albuquerque Makaio & Siena!" The two gibbons, despite their similar coloring, are actually two distinct species from Southeast Asia. This distinction highlights the importance of conservation efforts as the lar gibbon is Endangered, and the white-cheeked gibbon is Critically Endangered, both facing threats of hunting, illegal pet trade, and habitat loss.

During their initial days at the ABQ BioPark, Makaio and Siena spent time getting acquainted with each other indoors before venturing out into their new habitat. One heartwarming moment was when Makaio showed his supportive nature by encouraging Siena when she hesitated, as described by the park staff, "Makaio confidently explored and foraged, and even came back to the door to encourage his new friend Siena when she hesitated."

The ABQ BioPark staff expressed their excitement about the new additions, stating, "We are delighted to have them on our Ape walk, and can't wait for you to meet them!" Visitors to the park can now witness the bond forming between Makaio and Siena as they explore and interact in their new environment, providing a unique and educational experience for all guests.
