Club Sports at the University of New Mexico (UNM) are thriving, offering a plethora of options for students who wish to stay active and engaged in athletics while balancing their academic and personal lives. These sports programs, under the umbrella of UNM Recreational Services, cater to both competitive and recreational athletes.
Jessica Bennett, Club Sports Project Assistant and Sport and Recreational Club Council President, expressed her dedication to the program, stating, "I like to see everyone in action. It reminds me why I keep coming back to Club Sports and Recreation, especially at the collegiate level." Bennett emphasized the importance of behind-the-scenes work in ensuring the success of these programs.
Victoria Crawford-Perez, Club Sports Coordinator Specialist, highlighted the broader significance of club sports, stating, "Sports aren't just about the game; they're about the bonds we create, about discovering our inner strength and overcoming obstacles."
UNM boasts a variety of chartered club sports, including cricket, soccer, rugby, and hockey, among others. Recreational Services estimates that around 1,100 students participate in Club Sports in some capacity, with popular options ranging from Table Tennis to Soccer, Lacrosse, Rugby, and Hockey.
Bennett emphasized the inclusivity of the program, stating, "That's why we try to cater to as many students as possible and make sure they know if there's not a team now, they can charter and create one." The department's Club Sports Day event provides an opportunity for students to explore different sports and potentially join a club.
Club Sports at UNM are entirely student-run, with students handling recruitment, scheduling, and competition. Bennett noted the positive impact of club sports on students' mental health and overall well-being, stating, "I've had a lot of people tell me that being involved in a Club Sport specifically has done a lot for their mental health."
Despite not being at the NCAA level, UNM Club Sports offer students the chance to compete at a high level while also fostering a sense of community and teamwork. Bennett highlighted the commitment of student-athletes, emphasizing the passion they bring to their respective sports.
In conclusion, Bennett encapsulated the essence of Club Sports at UNM, stating, "Sports are some of the world's greatest unifiers. Definitely, I think that's our ultimate vision." Club Sports not only provide a platform for athletic pursuits but also serve as a unifying force that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, bringing students together through a shared passion for sports.
