The Global Education Office (GEO) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) is gearing up to celebrate a significant milestone in its history. GEO is marking its 60th anniversary this year, an occasion that will be commemorated with a special event on Thursday, April 25 at the University Club from 4 to 6 p.m.
Originally known as the Office of the Foreign Student Advisor when it opened its doors in August 1964, GEO has played a vital role in supporting international students at UNM for six decades. From its humble beginnings of assisting 205 students from 65 countries in its inaugural year, GEO's reach has expanded significantly. In 2023, the office provided support to over 1,300 international students from 96 countries, in addition to over 500 study abroad students.
Reflecting on the growth and evolution of international student support at UNM, GEO Executive Director Nicole Tami expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming celebration. Tami remarked, "We are excited to mark the growth and expansion of international student support at UNM over the last 60 years. There have been various iterations of the original office, reorganizations, and even a name change about ten years ago when we rebranded from Office of International Programs (OIPS) to GEO. We will take attendees down memory lane to reflect on where we’ve been and where we are headed."
