Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has introduced a new initiative called the S.H.O.T Program, which utilizes data from ShotSpotter technology to proactively address gun violence in the city. The pilot program, implemented in the Southeast neighborhood, has already shown promising results with a 47% decrease in gunshot detections.
Mayor Tim Keller commended the innovative approach, stating, "APD is being innovative with ShotSpotter data and utilizing this technology in a way that no other department has attempted. We are leveraging investments in technology and working with the community to help keep families safe."
Chief Harold Medina highlighted the program's effectiveness, stating, "Our investigators and command staff have taken the ShotSpotter technology far beyond what it was ever intended to do. Gun crimes are an issue in our community, and this is a proactive measure that is also helping build strong relationships with community members to collaborate and cut down gunshots fired in our city."
The program involves sending letters to residents in high-risk areas to inform them of APD's awareness of the situation and its efforts to address gun violence. Additionally, warning letters are issued to locations identified by ShotSpotter where gunshots originate. This approach has already resulted in an arrest for an individual with an outstanding warrant for Armed Robbery.
Furthermore, APD is distributing signs to encourage community members to report gun crimes, fostering a collaborative effort to combat violence. Detectives and the DIVRT team conduct follow-up investigations, utilizing video evidence and surveillance to track down offenders and prevent future incidents.
City Councilor Klarissa Peña expressed support for the program, emphasizing the importance of ShotSpotter technology in aiding law enforcement efforts. Peña stated, "The technology is like a fingerprint for shots fired, it gives officers the data to track those gunshots and react to reduce gun violence in our community."
The success of the S.H.O.T Program has extended to other areas as well, with proactive measures being taken at locations like Tower Pond Park, where the installation of a mobile surveillance camera led to a decline in ShotSpotter activations.
The initiative has not only demonstrated tangible results in reducing gun violence but has also fostered stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community. By leveraging technology, community engagement, and proactive strategies, APD is making significant strides in enhancing public safety and addressing the issue of gun violence in Albuquerque.
