The Albuquerque Police Department has recently bolstered its ranks by hiring nearly 100 Police Service Aides, with a new academy class of 27 individuals commencing their training this week. Chief Harold Medina expressed his enthusiasm for the new recruits, stating, "Police Service Aides serve a key role as they assist sworn officers and take on duties like traffic control and responses to minor vehicle crashes that frees up officers to respond to more urgent calls."

Chief Medina welcomed the 47th Police Service Aide class, noting that historically, the department only had about 30 PSAs in any given year. However, in 2022, efforts were ramped up to recruit more PSAs, resulting in a jump to 59 PSAs in 2023. With the addition of the latest class, there will be a total of 92 PSAs patrolling the streets of Albuquerque.

Emphasizing the importance of these roles, Chief Medina highlighted that the increased number of PSAs could potentially lead to a higher likelihood of individuals transitioning to become police officers, thus enhancing public safety in the city.

In order to be eligible for the position, candidates must meet specific requirements, including being at least 18 years old, having a high school diploma or GED, passing various examinations, and having the intention of becoming a police officer. Additionally, applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a valid work permit, possess correct vision, be able to work varying shifts, have no felony convictions, and be willing to progress into the sworn rank.

Individuals interested in joining the Albuquerque Police Department as a Police Service Aide can apply through the department's online portal at apply.apdonline.com.
