ABQ BioPark's Rozie the Elephant is expecting a baby in late 2024, much to the delight of the staff and community. "We’re thrilled about Rozie’s pregnancy," expressed Amber Alink, curator of elephants and primates. "Everyone at the BioPark is looking forward to a new calf joining our family and continuing our commitment to conserving this endangered species."
The 31-year-old Rozie, who was born at the BioPark, is part of a herd that includes her mother, Alice. The pregnancy has been progressing well, with Dr. Bradford noting, "The pregnancy thus far has been healthy," and the animal care team remaining cautiously optimistic about the future.
Elephant gestation lasts about 22 months, and the calf is expected to arrive in December. Whether the pregnancy is a result of natural breeding or artificial insemination, paternity will be confirmed through a DNA test after birth. Rozie is under the careful watch of the BioPark's expert animal care team, ensuring both her and the calf receive specialized prenatal care during the long gestation period.
Asian elephants are an endangered species facing threats like habitat loss and fragmentation in the wild. The ABQ BioPark, designated as an Elephant Breeding Facility by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Elephant Species Survival Plan, plays a crucial role in conservation efforts for the species.
For those interested in following Rozie's pregnancy journey and the upcoming arrival of the new zoo family member, updates can be found on the BioPark's website and social media platforms.
