In a bid to celebrate the intersection of art and poetry, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) has initiated a statewide ekphrastic poetry contest, drawing inspiration from artwork displayed across the state.

"The artwork on display throughout the Department of Cultural Affairs reminds us that beauty and inspiration are all around us," stated NMDCA Director of Communications and Marketing, Daniel Zillmann.

The contest, aimed at highlighting the artistic and cultural heritage of New Mexico, features 10 selected works of art from various NMDCA divisions, showcasing the state's diverse collections. According to Zillmann, the contest seeks to celebrate the best of their collections throughout New Mexico.

Noël Bella Merriam, Artistic Director at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and one of the contest judges, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, calling it "an incredible opportunity to not only highlight the diverse collection of art of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs but also to showcase the creativity and talent flourishing throughout our state."

Throughout the month of March, individuals are invited to submit ekphrastic poetry inspired by any of the 10 selected artworks. Participants can submit their poems via the 'Submit Your Poem' link on nmculture.org/poetry. The contest features two categories – Youth (6th to 12th graders) and Adult – with submissions closing on March 31.

Lauren Camp, the New Mexico Poet Laureate, along with a panel of experts, will judge the submissions anonymously. Winners in both the Adult and Youth categories will be announced on April 15 and will receive NMDCA Culture Passes, providing access to all 15 museums and historic sites under the department's purview.

The NMDCA encourages art and poetry enthusiasts to visit nmculture.org/poetry to learn more about the contest and draw inspiration from the 10 selected artworks.

Established in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs serves as the state's cultural steward, preserving and showcasing New Mexico's cultural riches through its various museums, historic sites, arts, archaeology, and library programs.

The initiative not only promotes the rich cultural heritage of New Mexico but also fosters creativity and appreciation for the arts among residents of all ages.
