Efficient and innovative ways to improve the health of all New Mexicans will be highlighted at the New Mexico Legislature at the 9th Annual Public Health Day at the State Capitol on Monday, February 12, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, with the theme "Threads of Wellness: A Tapestry of Public Health," aims to showcase the Department of Health's (DOH) programs and services and the efforts of community organizations statewide to provide broad healthcare opportunities for all people.

"The Department of Health's goal is for New Mexico to become the healthiest state in the United States by 2040," said Patrick Allen, DOH Cabinet Secretary. "The work that DOH and all of our community partners do is being supported in the legislature this year through steps like finalizing the establishment of the Healthcare Authority Department."

Public Health Day 2024 is hosted by the DOH, the New Mexico Public Health Association, the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils, UNM Center for Native American Health, Albuquerque Area Southwest Tribal Epidemiology Center, and the Public Health Institute. The event will provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations to learn from each other, raise awareness about public health issues, and engage in conversations that will benefit New Mexico.

During Public Health Day, DOH will share information about its important programs, including Medical Cannabis, School Based Health Centers, Injury and Violence Prevention, Hepatitis and Harm Reduction, Immunization, and the Office of Tribal Liaison. The department will also provide free adult COVID and flu vaccinations throughout the day.

DOH and its community partners are actively working to improve public health responsiveness statewide through a series of services and legislation. Their efforts aim to create a broader spectrum of healthcare options in rural and urban areas across New Mexico.

As the health of New Mexicans takes center stage on Public Health Day at the legislature, it is an opportunity for individuals, community organizations, and legislators to come together and prioritize the well-being of the state's residents. With a focus on collaboration and innovation, the event aims to move towards a healthier future for all.
