The University of New Mexico (UNM) has received platinum-level recognition from Family Friendly New Mexico for its workplace policies. This acknowledgment is complemented by UNM's attainment of the newly introduced Education Support Special Designation, a joint venture with the United Way of Central New Mexico.
UNM has established programs such as Tuition Remission and the Dependent Education program. These initiatives offer financial assistance to employees and their families in their pursuit of graduate and undergraduate education. The recent amendments to the University Administrative Policy (UAP) 3700, which governs Education Benefits, include the removal of the one-year prior employment requirement for Dependent Education eligibility. They also expand eligibility to post-doctoral fellows with a minimum three-month contract and 0.50 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), along with enhancing professional development opportunities. According to a press release by UNM, these proactive measures align with the Family Friendly New Mexico initiative's objective to promote family-friendly policies across the state through training, support, and resources provided to businesses.
"While we remain proud of our family-friendly policies, we're particularly excited that this year UNM is being recognized for educational support for our employees," said Kevin Stevenson, vice president for Human Resources at UNM. "In 2023, we revised our Education Benefits policy to expand eligibility for employees, their partners and dependents. The impact of a UNM education on the state and the economy is clear, and those impacts begin with a well-skilled and educated UNM workforce."
According to information provided by UNM on the About GHR webpage, Human Resources (HR) at UNM is committed to delivering exceptional service and resources aimed at improving employees' daily lives. With an aspiration to cultivate an engaged and empowered workplace culture, HR seeks to achieve this through enhanced professional development opportunities, attracting and retaining a diverse workforce, and implementing wellness programs for a balanced work-life experience.
