The city of Albuquerque has declared that its Department of Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Public Art Urban Enhancement Division, is organizing the grand opening of the new City Hall art gallery – Gallery One – and City Hall Public Art open house. This initiative, which includes a public gallery space and expanded offices for the growing Public Art staff, represents a project that took over five years to complete.

Gallery One will open its doors on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, from 5-8 p.m., offering an immersive experience for artists and the general public. The inaugural exhibition, "A Day in the Life II," partners seven local artists with city departments to reveal the human aspect of government and highlight its influence on the community. According to a press release by the city of Albuquerque, this exhibit will run until March 8, 2024.

According to Sherri Brueggemann, Public Art Division manager, "Our goals are to showcase primarily local artists who are looking to be part of a unique space." She added that "The Public Art team envisions exhibits as well as workshops that engage the public, employees, and most importantly artists."

The Department of Arts & Culture in Albuquerque contributes significantly to the city's cultural vibrancy with 19 Public Library branches, two museums, two theaters, a zoo, an aquarium, a botanic garden and fishing ponds. According to information provided by the city of Albuquerque on their Department of Arts & Culture About webpage, these facilities aim to enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

Albuquerque's Public Art Program was established under the Art in Municipal Places Ordinance. It dedicates 1% of City construction funds towards art acquisition. This program aligns with initiatives such as the Albuquerque Cultural Plan and Urban Enhancement Trust Fund along with a Collection Conservation Program which emphasizes arts education and community involvement while maintaining artistic assets.
