The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) has announced the launch of a new caregiver health model called "New MexiCare." This program aims to provide financial assistance to individuals and their caregivers who are not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid-paid caregiving services.

According to a press release by ALTSD, the application process for the New MexiCare program is now open. This program offers financial support to U.S. citizen residents aged 60 and above who have cognitive or physical limitations requiring assistance in two or more daily activities.

Eligible participants in counties such as Harding, Catron, Sierra, Lincoln, San Miguel, and De Baca can receive a stipend of up to $12,000 annually. This stipend can be used for services like caregiver support, respite care, transportation, and safety monitoring. Additionally, participants will have access to individualized service plans crafted with the help of a community engagement specialist.

The program aims to provide extra support to aging adults and their caregivers. New MexiCare Director Esperanza Lucero said, "We know that many New Mexicans are already providing support for their loved ones, often at great personal sacrifice. Through the implementation of this new program, we hope to provide some extra support so our older adults can thrive in their homes and stay in their communities of choice."

To be eligible for the New MexiCare program, individuals must have a maximum net monthly income of $3,300, and couples must have a maximum net monthly income of $6,600. There is also a financial holding limit of $19,800 for individuals and $39,600 for couples.

With the launch of the New MexiCare program, the ALTSD aims to provide additional assistance to aging adults and their caregivers who may not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid-paid caregiving services. By offering financial support and individualized service plans, the program hopes to help older adults thrive in their homes and communities of choice.

The ALTSD encourages eligible individuals to apply for the program and take advantage of the support available.
