The Outdoor Recreation Division within the Economic Development Department (EDD) has announced the recipients of the 2023 Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant. According to a press release, these grants, totaling $2,360,289, will support 20 projects aimed at enhancing outdoor infrastructure in New Mexico. Organizations involved in these projects will contribute an additional $1,953,453 in matching funds.
The grant awards range from $26,000 for Surf New Mexico, which plans to create a river park in Velarde, to $499,927 for the City of Carlsbad for the Carlsbad Lower Tansill Dam renovation initiative. These projects are estimated to create over 250 jobs and will either build or maintain more than 600 miles of trails across New Mexico.
The recipients of these grants are spread across 12 counties in New Mexico, with 80% of the projects located in rural areas and two in Tribal communities. This distribution ensures that various regions of the state will benefit from improved outdoor infrastructure.
"We are proud to support these organizations," said ORD Director Karina Armijo in a press release. "These projects are adding and updating trail infrastructure that promotes stewardship, increases equitable access to the outdoors for all New Mexicans, and enriches our community connection to the stunning landscapes that define our state while creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities."
The Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant aims to support projects that expand outdoor opportunities, enhance the quality of life, and yield economic benefits for communities. The projects funded through this grant will promote improved public health, eco-tourism, and overall well-being. Eligible project categories include trail development, signage installation, river access enhancements, whitewater facilities, outdoor classrooms, trailhead upgrades, picnic shelters, and wildlife viewing areas.
One of the notable projects receiving funding is the Carlsbad Lower Tansill Dam renovation initiative. Carlsbad Mayor Dale W. Janway expressed excitement about the improvements that will be made to this popular recreational area. "The Lower Tansill Dam area is an extremely popular spot for Carlsbad residents, especially those who enjoy more peaceful recreational activities such as fishing or kayaking, as well as bird watching and walking," said Mayor Janway. "We're extremely excited about seeing some greatly needed improvements made to this area."
These projects are expected to have a significant impact on New Mexico, contributing to the construction and maintenance of approximately 600 miles of trails and creating over 250 job opportunities. The investments in outdoor infrastructure will not only benefit local communities but also attract visitors and bolster economic growth through eco-tourism.
The Outdoor Recreation Division's commitment to funding these projects reflects their dedication to promoting outdoor recreation, public health, and economic development in New Mexico. By investing in outdoor infrastructure, the division aims to provide equitable access to the outdoors for all residents and enhance the state's natural beauty.
