Fire Chief Jaramillo: 'Deputy Chief Sotelo and Deputy Chief Marrufo bring the experience, innovation, dedication, and commitment to AFR’s staff required to serve the department and the community in the roles of Human Resources, Logistics, and Finance'

On Aug. 10, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and Fire Chief Emily Jaramillo announced the promotion of two Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) members to the position of Deputy Chief, filling positions left vacant due to retirements. According to a press release, in their new roles, the deputy chiefs will work to improve the department's internal operations to continue delivering exceptional emergency services to the community.

“Deputy Chief Sotelo and Deputy Chief Marrufo bring the experience, innovation, dedication, and commitment to AFR’s staff required to serve the department and the community in the roles of Human Resources, Logistics, and Finance,” said Jaramillo, according to the press release. “We are grateful to have them on our team as we continue to strive for excellence in our service to the people of Albuquerque.” 

According to the press release, Deputy Chief Christopher Sotelo, an Albuquerque native, brings a diverse background to his leadership role. He graduated from New Mexico Highlands University after serving in the United States Army and mentoring youth at a juvenile center. With a 15-year career at Albuquerque Fire Rescue, he's served in operational and instructional roles, and he'll now oversee key divisions like Human Resources, Safety, Public Affairs, and Mental Health and Wellness.

Deputy Chief Alejandro Marrufo, also a native of Albuquerque, graduated from West Mesa High School and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Administration from Columbia Southern University. Joining Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) in 2008 as part of the 76th cadet class, his dedication led him to the role of Captain overseeing the Emergency Dispatch Center, where his leadership was instrumental in earning the Division of the Year accolade in 2020 and the IAFF Outstanding Leader recognition in 2021. In his new role as Deputy Chief, Alejandro Marrufo will extend his expertise to oversee key divisions such as Logistics, Fiscal, Fleet, and Capital Improvements, according to the press release.
