Superintendent Chavez announces new principal of César Chávez Elementary School: 'Her leadership will further ensure high expectations for all students'

On Aug. 8, Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez announced the appointment of Maeghan McCormick as principal of César Chávez Elementary School. According to a press release, McCormick, an English language coach in SFPS’ Language & Culture Department since 2019, has been appointed to leverage her proficiency in language acquisition to benefit César Chávez, a school where 58 percent of its students are English Language Learners (ELLs).

“I’m excited to announce the appointment of Maeghan McCormick as principal of César Chávez Elementary School. As an English language development expert, she is adept at improving English learner instructional practice and supporting multilingual learners. Her leadership will further ensure high expectations for all students,” said Superintendent Chavez, according to the press release. “With César Chávez one of seven SFPS school improvement focus schools this year, her appointment is occurring at an especially opportune time.” 

According to the press release, McCormick served as a Spanish instructor at The Academy for Technology and the Classics in Santa Fe from 2015 to 2019, teaching Spanish at various levels. During that time, she also served as English Language Development (TESOL) instructor for grades 7-12, offering guidance on ELL differentiation strategies to staff. Her teaching experience also includes teaching Spanish at Tierra Encantada Charter School from 2012 to 2015 in Santa Fe and East Mountain High School from 2009 to 2012 in Sandia Park. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of New Mexico (UNM) and a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Education with a specialization in Language Acquisition also from UNM.

“I am honored to serve the community in this new capacity as principal of César Chávez Elementary School,” said McCormick, according to the press release. “I am excited to join the team of talented educators and staff members in the work of engaging students with high expectations while providing the equitable support that they deserve. I am dedicated to developing high-quality programs in neighborhood schools that empower students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.”
