In response to the risk of health threats from widespread smoke resulting from ongoing wildfires in New Mexico on Aug. 7 caused by factors such as high winds, heat and arid conditions, the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) issued essential guidelines to ensure residents' safety, according to a press release. These recommendations are intended to mitigate the potential adverse effects of the smoke that has been generated by wildfires and human-induced fires occurring throughout the state.

"Amid the current fire-induced challenges, the health and well-being of our residents remain our top priority," Heidi Krapfl, deputy director of the DOH Epidemiology & Response Division, said.

These guidelines emphasize the importance of monitoring air quality alerts from AirNow.gov, accessible through weather apps, news websites and broadcast media. The guidelines also suggest utilizing the 5-3-1 Method which provides specific actions based on varying visibility levels. For instance, when visibility drops below 5 miles, outdoor activity reduction is recommended for vulnerable groups such as young children, adults over 65, pregnant women and those with respiratory conditions. If visibility falls below 3 miles, staying indoors is advised for the same groups, and if visibility drops below 1 mile, all individuals should remain indoors unless evacuation orders are in place, the press release said.

“The guidance we are releasing today empowers individuals to make informed choices that mitigate the potential health risks associated with wildfire smoke. By following these guidelines, we can ensure our communities’ resilience against these hazards,” Krapfl said.

Individuals facing respiratory challenges or heart conditions should adopt necessary measures during periods of smoke exposure. These precautions encompass minimizing outdoor activities, sealing windows, deactivating swamp coolers and utilizing air conditioners in recirculation mode. In cases of prolonged poor air quality, it's advisable to create a clean air room at home. Those with asthma should adhere to their asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medication accessible. Individuals with heart ailments should remain vigilant for symptoms like rapid pulse, breathlessness or unusual weakness and should reach out to their healthcare provider if concerns arise.
