U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued a statement regarding the confirmation of Xochitl Torres Small as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Torres Small, previously confirmed by the United States Senate as the Under Secretary for Rural Development on October 7, 2021, had also served as a United States Representative for New Mexico's second congressional district. In her previous role, she was a member of the House Agriculture Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, while also serving as Chairwoman of the Oversight, Management, and Accountability Subcommittee of the House Homeland Security Committee, and notably, as the first woman and person of color to represent New Mexico's second congressional district, according to a press release.
