After appearing virtually in front of a judge June 2, Jacob Castillo, the alleged gunman behind the deadly Red River biker gang shooting, found out he'll be staying behind bars, KOB reported.
“You will be held in custody with a no bond hold until your detention hearing in the district court," Ernest Ortega, Taos County magistrate judge told Castillo, the station reported.
According to investigators, Castillo was behind the shootout at the bike rally in Red River that left three dead and many others injured. Castillo, along with three others, were arrested in Red River. He is from Rio Rancho. Castillo is currently the only one charged with murder from the shootout.
During his virtual hearing, Castillo said, “I haven’t been able to reach out to a private attorney yet due to my high-profile status at Metropolitan Detention Center. Can you guys appoint me a public defender?"
After the shooting, Castillo was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital and then released, KOB reported. Documents show that Castillo was identified as the main shooter in the incident. According to police, he shot and killed Damian Breaux. Breaux was a member of the Bandidos. Castillo was arrested and then sent to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque.
Castillo told police said Breaux ran at him and punched him in the face. At that point, a fight erupted between the two and Castillo said other Bandidos began hitting Breaux in the head. Castillo said Breaux shot him in the shoulder and he fired back.
According to Castillo, the fight in Red River bled over from an earlier event at a wedding. That was when a Waterdog member took a picture with a Mongol member. That man is the third person charged in the Red River shooting. Also arrested for unrelated drug charges were Christopher Garcia and Matthew Jackson.
Castillo is expected to be before a judge again soon, and Garcia and Jackson will stay in jail until their trial, KOB reported.
