The ABQ BioPark announced on May 26 the loss of Koluk, a polar bear who had been in the care of the park since 1997.
“Koluk was one of the most playful animals at the BioPark, and he was a favorite among guests and staff. We are so fortunate to have cared for Koluk, and we are heartbroken with this loss," Casey Taylor, an assistant mammal curator, told KOB4 news during a recent report.
Koluk passed away at age 26. Officials said, as of last week, Koluk’s health had declined rapidly. According to officials, they reported Koluk as being sluggish, stiff and lacking an appetite. Following a recent exam where veterinarians diagnosed him with severe liver and kidney disease, the condition progressed to the point where veterinarians were forced to euthanize him.
BioPark officials said Koluk will be remembered as a gentle giant who maintained his fondness for diving into the pool to catch fish and treats, even at an older age. While there, he also developed trust with the animal care team and often voluntarily participated in his health check-ups.
While Koluk’s twin brother, Kiska, is in good health and is still active in his habitat, the care team said they gave the sibling extra attention and say he adjusted well to being on his own while Koluk fell ill. The two polar bears were born in November 1996 at the Hogle Zoo in Utah. A video detailing Koluk and Kiska’s lives together was released by the BioPark and is viewable online.
