Meals on Wheels of New Mexico, a nonprofit that has provided food for people in need for decades, is stocking vending machines at select hospitals with healthy food options.
Unlike vending machines that are normally loaded with treats packed with sugar and non-essential fats, the vending machines provided by Meals on Wheels are filled with nutritionally beneficial food provided by local farmers, according to the Forage website. Proceeds from the machines will go to Meals on Wheels.
The machines are currently located at Presbyterian Northside Urgent Care, Presbyterian Rust Medical Center, Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center, and Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital.
“This is a triple win,” Dennis Plummer, Meals on Wheels of New Mexico chief strategy officer, told KRQE. “It’s easy access to fresh foods for patients, their families, and medical staff. We are supporting local farmers and partners, and the proceeds will support people who need a local home-delivered meal service.”
Meals on Wheels plans to put healthy vending machines in other locations around Albuquerque and Santa Fe, according to KRQE.
"As humans, we have always had the need to search out our food sources,” Forage states on its website. “Today, we may not need to search as widely and there seems to be food in abundance. But what if your choice had a purpose? What if your choice could change a life? Here at Forage, we provide locally sourced, nutritious food on the go. Simply swipe your card, open the door, and select your items. Now, enjoy your food knowing that you are helping someone in need.”
Meals on Wheels of Albuquerque asked for donations on Facebook Thursday to continue providing healthy meals.
"Skyrocketing food prices are impacting the demand for our services," the organization stated in its post. "We need your help today more than ever. Neighbors in New Mexico are homebound and struggling to make ends meet. Donate to Meals on Wheels of Albuquerque and help provide a healthy meal to vulnerable community members who need it most."
