Now in his 80s, Franc Chewiwie continues to share his love of music, something he was recognized for recently by KOB 4’s “Pay it 4ward” program.
Chewiwie, a world-renowned pianist, is spending his retirement teaching piano lessons to children in his neighborhood.
“He’s a hidden jewel in Albuquerque,” Chris Martinez, who nominated Chewiwie to Pay It 4ward, told KOB. “You’ve probably at least heard his music. I first heard him in 1975 in the UNM fiestas, playing with Mongo Santamaria, this congo player. From there on in, he’s playing all over Albuquerque at various places venues for with bars and music, food scenes.”
Inducted into the New Mexico Hall of Fame in 2018, Chewiwie is sharing his gift of music.
"I know he’s teaching a lot of kids in the neighborhood that he goes around and goes to their house and shows them,” Martinez said. “He’s teaching lessons all during the week. He’s so busy right now with piano lessons.”
Martinez and KOB presented Chewiwie with $400 to recognize his commitment to the community. “I appreciate you coming by,” Chewiwie said. “I’ve been in the music business for a long time, since I was 4 years old. My first professional gig was at the age of 10. Playing the piano enriches your mind, your heart, and your soul.”
Martinez said he and Chewiwie became next-door neighbors, and then bandmates.
“Whoever shows up to jam with us, we just start jamming,” Martinez said. “Of course, now he’s getting older. You got to carry the equipment for him, and you know, help him set up everything.”
