New Mexico's Martinez on PBR can design: 'Seeing my can in person was probably the most exciting part of it all'

Andrew Martinez, a New Mexico native, is seeing his design on millions of cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) after winning a national contest.

“The most exciting thing was actually going to a bar or a store and seeing my cans for the first time,” Martinez told KRQE recently. ”Seeing my can in person was probably the most exciting part of it all, to be honest.”

Martinez, who now lives in Seattle, is one of 10 people who won a national competition that began last November while he was quarantining with COVID-19. He heard about the competition after completing 15 weeks of CNM’s Ingenuity Deep Dive UX/UI Bootcamp program. He submitted seven designs to PBR.

“I made seven of them, and I would say, yeah, probably 10 to 20 hours each spent on them,” Martinez said. “I figured if nothing comes out of this other than a good portfolio piece, then that’s fine with me.”

His design is now on 140 million cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon across the country. They began showing up in stores in October. At least it’s a beer Martinez likes.

“I have been known to drink some PBRs,” he said.

Martinez noted that he wants people to enjoy the outside of the can just as much as the beer on the inside.

“People are finding my can and tagging me on social media.” he said. “I really get a kick out of that. That’s been like the super fun part of the process.”
