Hundreds of families in Albuquerque got Thanksgiving meals recently at the Mesa Verde Community Center. They also got coats for the winter.

Healthcare provider Western Sky Community Care gave out 300 grocery bags filled with ingredients to make a Thanksgiving meal and gift cards for turkeys. The non-profit organization Bus of Hope was also there, handing out coats.

“They were giving turkeys out, so we figured we could bring jackets since it’s getting really cold,” Eli Grado, with Bus of Hope, told KRQE.

According to Feeding America, one in five New Mexico children is facing hunger issues. Feeding America, according to its website, is “the largest charity working to end hunger in the United States.” It partners with food banks, food pantries and food programs to bring food to people facing hunger.

The Western Sky Community Care group will be distributing more Thanksgiving-related goods on November 19 at the Dennis Chavez Community Center in Albuquerque from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Western Sky Community Care holds holiday giveaways throughout the state. "We're local people who care," it reads on its Facebook page. "Western Sky Community Care is more than a Medicaid company. We are people living in New Mexico, serving New Mexicans. We know you and we care about you because your health is our health."
