Cancellations mar Balloon Fiesta: 'It is a weather-dependent event'

The 50th anniversary of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta could have turned out better.

Four of eight sessions were canceled due to inclement weather, according to KOAT. This left visitors disappointed as organizers explained their no-refund policy.

"I'm sorry for their experience if they're not able to experience all of Balloon Fiesta, but it is a weather-dependent event," Paul Smith, executive director of the Balloon Fiesta, said. "We don't have refunds. We're a nonprofit corporation, actually. So, we have to plan on what we can, but we issue rain checks if there is [sic]."

Thousands of people come from near and far for the annual festival, KOAT reported. Visitors this year missed the opportunity to experience the breathtaking view of hundreds of hot air balloons in flight due to cancellation of half of the sessions.

Laura Clark and Stuart Russell traveled to the U.S. from Scotland and planned to spend one day at the Balloon Fiesta, according to KOAT. They missed their only chance to see the event due to poor weather and a cancellation.

"This was it,” Clark said. “This was the one day. I'm disappointed. It's a long way to come from Aberdeen to Albuquerque, but we'll come back next year ... This is the end of our trip in New Mexico, so we tried to end it with the balloon festival."

Organizers of the Balloon Fiesta do not offer refunds, KOAT reported. They will, however, provide a rain check that can be used within the same year.

"We try to make it affordable for everyone," Smith said. "So, if they do miss out on a year, there are times we can actually – under certain circumstances – give them a rain check for the following year, so we'll do that as well. Hopefully, they can make another trip back because we want everyone to be able to see Balloon Fiesta."
