Mark Ronchetti, a gubernatorial candidate in New Mexico, said that New Mexico's government is rich, but questioned whether New Mexicans are better off because of it.
Ronchetti held a press conference Thursday to talk about his economic recovery and inflation relief plan, which includes 8 steps. Those range from tax cuts for low and middle-income New Mexicans to improving the state’s workforce.
“The State of New Mexico and especially our government has never been bigger and richer than it is now," he told the New Mexico Sun. "It’s 40% bigger than it was when this governor took over. What I would ask New Mexicans is, is your life better because of it? And for far too many New Mexicans the answer to that is no, it’s not.”
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued a statement in response.
"New Mexico is now among the top ten states for job growth," the statement said. "Ronchetti doesn’t know the issues New Mexicans face and therefore cannot and will not deliver economic solutions that help everyday New Mexicans.”
The campaign also cited up to $15,000 in rebates for taxpayers, reduced income and gross receipts taxes, and decreased childcare expenses.
