Obituary

Dr. Gary Mares passed away on July 11, 2022. He is survived by his mother, Chona Mares; his brother, Frank J. Mares, M.D. and wife Barbara Mares, their daughters Cristina Mares and Andrea Mares; as well as his daughter Rachael McDermott and husband Terry McDermott; his son Michael Mares and wife Michelle Mares; and his grandchild Jude Mares. He was also blessed with 14 more nieces and nephews. His father, Presciliano Mares, preceded Gary in his death.

Gary was a graduate of St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque. He subsequently attended the University of New Mexico (UNM) and graduated from Washington University Dental School in St. Louis, Missouri in 1981. Gary practiced dentistry in Albuquerque for 27 years.

As an avid fly fisherman, Gary enjoyed sharing his love of fishing with his family. He was also an avid golfer, bowler, supporter of Arizona Cardinals football, and devotee of UNM Lobo sports. Gary loved listening to music, which lead to his son, Michael, being active in the music community. In his retirement, Gary pursued his passion and talents in landscape design and maintenance.

A rosary will be recited at 11:00 a.m., with mass starting at 11:30am on July 21, 2022 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish.
