Attorney Jacob Candelaria, of Candelaria Law LLC, is filing a lawsuit against New Mexico Child, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) due to the fact that they feel the agency has broken its promise of more transparency in the department, KRQE reported.

Candelaria Law LLC is a New Mexico law firm serving the legal needs of New Mexicans and their families.

Candelaria said that the Child, Youth and Families Department won't do any better until they practice more transparency.

“It’s not going to do better until they open their doors and let the public in to really see what’s going on, and really try to develop an explanation of how we fix such a failed agency," Candelaria said, according to KRQE.

The law firm asserts that a new committee isn't a reason to do things out of the public's view. This also isn't the first time CYFD has been criticized for its lack of transparency. He believed that efforts by the committee to be more transparent were not adequate.

“To keep everything very secret until a pre-approved sanitized and public relations glossy report is released; that is just simply not good enough. This agency needs top-down dramatic reform," Candelaria said.

The committee was founded when Secretary Barbara Vigil took over for Brian Blalock last year. Interestingly enough, Blalock resigned following a scandal of secrecy when the department was caught using a messaging system designed to delete conversations. More transparency within CYFD was then promised by Vigil.

A second closed meeting was held by that committee last week, breaking the Open Meetings Act.
