Leah Roark organized an abortion rights protest in Albuquerque on July 16 for those who felt the overturning of Roe v. Wade was taking a step back for the country.
“We’re very angry about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe,” Roark told KRQE News. “It feels very regressive, and we obviously don’t want that for our society.”
The protest, which was also a voter registration event, at Albuquerque's Civic Plaza brought together dozens of reproductive rights supporters. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which took away the constitutional right to an abortion.
Roark said the Court’s ruling is very concerning for women.
“Especially my nieces, her daughters,” Roark told KRQE News. “We want them to have access to safe abortion and health care. We want a promising future.”
The protest in Albuquerque is just one many nationwide protests that have taken place since the conservative-majority court’s decision on the case was leaked two months ago.
The organizers of the protest say that the best way to effect change is to vote in every election.
