Undies for Everyone, a nonprofit based in Texas, is helping more than 8,400 children in Albuquerque receive new underwear this year.
"Kids get lots of toys and things donated, but everyone ignores underwear and socks,” Amy Weiss, founder of Undies for Everyone, told KOAT. “You can't get underwear in the same resources that you get donated used clothing. With Undies for Everyone, families know they don't have to worry about their kids feeling out of place. They know that literally, their kid is covered."
Each of the children in Albuquerque will receive a pack of seven pairs for the year, meaning 59,000 pairs of underwear are scheduled to be distributed this year. Undies for Everyone purchases the underwear and delivers them to clothing banks throughout the country.
"It's why we're here,” Weiss said to KOAT. “We do as much as we can to help people who aren't as fortunate while we're on this Earth."
Erin Chavez of the Albuquerque Public Schools said providing new clean underwear is an overlooked need.
"Imagine a student who had to wear underwear from hand-me-downs from older siblings,” Chavez said to KOAT. “It makes a difference with how they interact with their teammates on a sports team or with their classmates in school.”
