Dear Rep. Romero,
As an avid cyclist I support wider shoulders for Hyde Park Rd. NM 475. I have biked up and down the ski road many times and the road is narrow and dangerous as it stands now. There are parts of its shoulder that are giving way. Indeed I saw a cyclist crash because of the soft pavement on the shoulder and he was going quite fast downhill on this steep and twisty road. Please tell me what I can do to make Santa Fe more bicycle friendly. New Mexico is constantly ranked highest in the U.S. for pedestrian and cyclist fatality rates. I lost a good friend of mine when he was hit by a car while on his bike. As someone who commutes daily by bike, this is a very personal issue for me.
Suggestions are:
Create a separated bicycle lane on St. Michael's Drive. There is none to date. St. Mikes is a state highway that is also a city road. There are six lanes for cars; none for bikes. Clearly not transportation equity.
Clean the bike lanes on Osage, Siler, Alameda, Aqua Fria and wherever needed. They are full of scoria (lava) and dangerous to bike.
Remove the construction signs from Agua Fria that are currently in the bicycle lanes. There is no place for cyclists to go but traffic.
Create separated bicycle lanes on Cerrillos Rd. The bike lanes that were installed on Cerrillos are far to close to traffic for the speed on this road.
Otowi is a great bike route, but I suggest removing the stop sign at San Felipe Ave. so it flows better. (The stop sign should face San Felipe traffic.) Santa Fe has no Bicycle Blvd. This would create the first, in one simple move.
Create a dedicated bicycle lane on Paseo de Peralta. Not just a faded sharrow. Thank you so much for your time. Let's make Santa Fe a cleaner and safer city.
I realize that these are divided into city, state, and MPO boundaries, but I am willing to work with you to make Santa Fe more bicycle-friendly. I am cc'ing some people who might have further input.
I would appreciate hearing back from you.
