More than 550,000 New Mexico taxpayers are receiving at least $250 in household relief funds being issued by the state.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced last week that $200 million would be distributed to residents, beginning late last week. Taxpayers with direct deposit accounts with the state would be the first to receive their share of funds, while paper checks for another 200,000 taxpayers will be distributed over the next few weeks, as reported by KOB 4.
“Starting today and throughout the summer, we are putting nearly half a billion dollars back into the pockets of New Mexicans,” Lujan Grisham said in her announcement. “Across the country, Americans are grappling with the high costs of essentials. Here in New Mexico, we are doing all we can to provide relief to New Mexico’s families.”
The rebates to taxpayers were approved in a special legislative session this spring as part of a mandate to get much-needed funds in the hands of families dealing with the remnants of the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and wildfires that have engulfed the state.
Taxpayers filing individual returns will receive another $250 rebate in August. Those who file joint returns or as heads of household will receive $500 rebates beginning this week and an additional $500 in August.
In addition, $20 million in relief payments is available to those who do not file state income taxes because of income level. Non-filers can apply for a one-time relief payment of either $500 or $1,000 depending on family size. Applications are available at the Human Services Department website until May 31.
