An Albuquerque gas station recently was charging nearly $7 a gallon for gas, even as the average cost of regular gasoline in Arizona was $4.70.
An M&M gas station located at 1316 Yale Blvd. SE toward the Albuquerque International Sunport had been selling regular gas for nearly $7 a gallon, KOB 4 reported.
The cost is “causing double takes,” KOB 4 said.
“This has been going on for the last four years, when gas was a $1.85 these guys had it at $4.98,” Henry Zachery told KOB 4.
M&M’s owner is free to set his own price for gasoline, the business’ clerk told KOB 4. Some locals think the owner is charging high prices because arrivals from the nearby airport assume that the prices in Albuquerque are at nearly $7 per gallon.
The average cost of regular gas was $4.92 in Arizona as of May 26, according to AAA. The national average as of May 26 was $4.60.
The cost of gas is rising, AAA said.
“Drivers are paying more at the pump — a lot more — as the cost of gasoline moves steadily higher,” AAA said. “The increase is primarily due to the high cost of crude oil, which was hovering near $100 a barrel last week and is now closing in on $110.”
