'Firefighters needed snacks and Gatorade': New Mexico residents deliver refreshments

A New Mexico community collected donations for firefighters who battled the Calf Canyon and Hermits Peak fires. Recently, two fires in Calf Canyon and Hermits Peak occurred in northern New Mexico, according to KOB 4.

The fires grew together into one larger, more dangerous fire.

"Yesterday, I got a message from someone at the Buena Vista Fire Department that the firefighters needed snacks and Gatorade," Martin Duran said, as reported by KOB 4. "And they were feeding the dogs that were left behind, so they were in desperate need of dog food and cat food."

The combined fire is more of a threat because it is harder for firefighters to control the larger blaze. The dry conditions in New Mexico are making it easier for fires to spread and grow larger.

Locals in northern New Mexico have put together resources to help individuals who were displaced by the fires, in addition to firefighters who are trying to get control of the blazes. Duran started putting together donations outside of a Walmart store, and now the communities around Mora and Las Vegas are joining forces to contribute donations of essentials such as food, water, and personal items, KOB 4 reported.

Duran is using a horse trailer to contain the supplies.
