Suspect in hotel homicide to remain in jail until trial: 'This defendant absolutely poses a danger to the community'

The Second Judicial District Court recently decided that a man who allegedly committed a string of serious, violent crimes in Albuquerque would remain locked up pre-trial.

Suspect Donovan Bookout allegedly shot and killed a security guard at the Ambassador Inn on Candelaria Road before carjacking a vehicle at gunpoint and getting into a shootout with Albuquerque police, according to KOB 4.

Prosecutors claim there are many reasons to keep Bookout behind bars, including a long, violent criminal history.

"This defendant absolutely poses a danger to the community, and there are no release conditions that the court can fashion to protect the safety of the community," prosecutor Jolanna Macias said, as reported by KOB 4. "These crimes were perpetrated on random, innocent members of the community."

The defense agreed that the accusations were serious but suggested Bookout be released on strict conditions, and a public safety assessment recommended that he should be released.

The judge agreed with the prosecution and decided to keep Bookout behind bars.

"I am going to grant the state's motion for pre-trial detention," Second Judicial District Court Judge Britt Baca-Miller said, according to KOB 4. "I can't think of any conditions of release that I could fashion that could adequately monitor Mr. Bookout's actions to make sure he is not violent."
