New Mexico county clerks from across the state are advocating for proposed legislation that would establish an election security program in the state.
According to KRQE, state clerks support Senate Bill 6 because they say it will increase voter transparency, create an election security program, and align USPS guidelines with absentee voting deadlines.
“We’re simply asking to put these back because we found they were best practices. The clerks across the state, across political parties, support this bill,” Santa Fe County Clerk Katherine Clark said, according to KRQE.
Many provisions of the bill were introduced during the pandemic, but they were allowed to expire.
27 of 33 New Mexico clerks showed their support for the bill at a virtual press conference.
The bill has passed the Senate and is waiting for approval from the House.
