New Mexico state Rep. Georgene Louis was reportedly arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and other violations on Feb. 14, according to a media report.

According to a story on KRQE’s website, Santa Fe County Jail records indicated that Louis (D-Albuquerque) was arrested at 5:46 a.m. on Feb. 14 on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated, violating speed limits, and other charges related to vehicle registration and lack of insurance. Police confirmed the arrest Monday and Louis issued a statement Monday night.

“I am sorry and I deeply regret my lapse in judgment,” Louis said in the statement. “I know I let so many people down. I am accepting responsibility for my mistake. I am prioritizing my health and I will work hard to regain the trust of my constituents, my community, and my family.”

Loius is a five-term representative for District 26, on Albuquerque's west side.

Louis is chair of New Mexico's House Government, Elections & Indian Affairs Committee. She is also a member of the House Judiciary and House Rules & Order of Business committees.

A meeting of one of these committees was canceled, and New Mexico’s Democratic leaders issued a joint statement on the arrest.

“We are aware of this developing situation and it is important that we let the judicial process take its course. In the meantime, the legislature will continue its critical work over the next four days,” the statement said.

New Mexico Republican Party Chairman Steve Pearce also issued a statement calling for Louis’ resignation.
