Lobos women stay perfect at The Pit

When you talk about a home court advantage, point to the Lobos women’s basketball team as an example of a team that knows how to defend its turf.

The Lobos (17-4 overall, 8-0 in the Mountain West) remained perfect at home, where they’ve won all 11 games so far this season after defeating San Jose State 87-57 Monday night.

“I thought that everybody that got in the game contributed, played hard, and I think that was good,” head coach Mike Bradbury said on the school’s website.

New Mexico took its first lead at 4-2 after a Shaiquel McGruder layup. They built on it throughout the rest of the game, building a double-digit lead late in the first quarter and extending that to a 24-point lead at the half.

The squad spread the glory on offense, with 13 players seeing action and 11 of them scoring.

McGruder led all players with 18 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Viane Cumber added 14 off the bench thanks to a hot hand from long distance as she sank four 3-pointers.

Ella Ogier had a team-high 13 points for the Spartans (3-15, 0-7).

New Mexico is the only Mountain West team that is unbeaten in conference play. Its game tonight against UNLV, the team that is in second place in the conference standings, is sure to be a meaningful one in Nevada.
