Suspect accused of shooting Farmington officer arrested in Arizona amid 'very emotional week'

The man accused of shooting Farmington officer Joseph Barreto was found in Maricopa County, Ariz., earlier this month, according to the Farmington Police Department, KRQE reports.

“This is the culmination of a very emotional week for FPD. We look forward to working closely with the district attorney as this case moves through the courts, so we can achieve our goals of holding all people involved in this incident accountable and keeping our citizens and officers safe,” said FPD Chief Steve Hebbe.

The suspect, Elias Buck, was arrested on Friday on an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge after being accused of shooting Barreto in the right arm on Jan. 8 during a DUI investigation. He was located after Phoenix Police followed a tip given regarding his whereabouts, according to the station.

The tip specified that the perpetrator was at a  Quiktrip Convenience Store with Victoria “Rossi” Hernandez. Even though the pair weren’t initially identified, a security guard later recognized them and notified police.

“It’s an event we haven’t had up here in 30 years… an officer shot. So it was a singular event; very traumatizing to the department, very long week. Officers are tired,” Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said.

After a small chase, according to KRQE reports, they were taken into custody, resulting in Hernandez’s release amid the pending investigation.

“A subject similar to that description would be in a specific area in Phoenix… officers went out there and during their initial first contact… they weren’t able to find him,” said Sgt. Vincent Cole with the Phoenix Police Department.

Farmington Police revealed details regarding officer Barreto’s condition, stating that he underwent a successful surgery over the weekend. Buck is now waiting to be extradited back to New Mexico. Though he wasn’t armed at the time of his arrest, he is expected to face escape charges in Colorado and Arizona after attempting to flee from officials.
