PNM, New Mexico's largest electric utility, is set to extend the deadline for its COVID-19 Customer Relief Fund, helping eligible customers pay down or pay off their past due PNM bills with a one-time credit.

In an announcement from the utility company this week, PNM said the new deadline will be March 31, as many customers continue to see financial hardships related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Disconnection is not a position any customer ever wants to be in, but the good news is there is a lot of money available through assistance programs that we can help you sort through and help get you caught back up again,” PNM wrote on its website.

According to a report by KRQE, about 40,000 customers are past due on payments and the total past due amount is currently $13.2 million.

The fund is open to any residential, small business or nonprofit customer that may need assistance on their bill due to COVID-19-related hardships.

Before applying, KRQE reports customers must gather verification of household income and copies of identification for all household members, as well as get a copy of their past-due PNM bill. Customers may apply for the fund by calling PNM directly or virtually through the PNM website.
